A little bit of background for those of you who aren’t familiar with the area: The DTES is an extremely poverty stricken portion of Vancouver that lies literally one block away from some of the richest areas of the city. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I was in Vancouver on business and my colleges and I decided to go to Gastown for dinner. One wrong turn led to another and before we knew it, we were in the heart of East Hastings street. I pulled out my camera and snapped a few pictures. I came away from this experience very emotional. Never before had I seen such blatant open drug use and prostitution mixed with a high rate of mental illness. I don’t know what else to say other than it was a very important moment in my life that I will never forget.

I live right outside of Baltimore. Trust me, the worst parts of the inner city have nothing on the drug use of the DTES. It was that crazy.

But that milk crate is too high class for Baltimore.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, having lived downtown for a couple years. Either that, or mid 90's DC. I remember my first trip to the Capital Ballroom. Needles and small bags everywhere, and a somewhat scary looking (to 17 year old me at the time) guy advising he’d watch my car for five bucks. A few locals advised me just to give him the five-er, and about 20 minutes later I spotted him jumping all over the hood and roof of another vehicle who’s owner presumably elected to forego his parking insurance program.

That area has improved a lot recently. If we went back t area circa 1992 you'd lose your mind. I used to work on social housing down there. So fun. Nothing like waiting for the city needle crew to come clean up before we could start work.

Yeah...this is what happens when you shut down the mental institutions, and don't fund enough homeless shelters. The province and city at quite content to ignore it, and spend money on bike lanes and anti-suicide barriers on bridges instead. It's interesting to see and read an outside perspective. I've grown up here and you just get used to it. The apathy is widespread, I'm guilty of it as well.

I have never seen this part of Vancouver, and living for a time at Jane and Finch ( Toronto ), I though “lol, oh Vancouver”.

But, after doing some reading, holy shit Vancouver, get your shit together!
